Animals In Need

Over the past 6 months Victoria Adoptables Dog Rescue has taken in a number of injured, sick or abandoned dogs. All required vet care and long-term foster homes.

Below are just a few of the dogs and their stories.

Kona suffered a fractured leg after a dog fight. He's currently in long-term foster care and recovering from his injury.
Max came to us after being hit and dragged by a car. He needed months of extensive vet care, hydrotherapy, bandage changes and xrays.
Banjo came into our care obese and requiring cruciate ligament surgery. He's currently recovering in foster care.
Lily and Marshall came to us with a damaged, non-visual eye each due to trauma they suffered as tiny puppies. In order to avoid further complications their eyes had to be surgically removed. They are both awaiting new homes.
Bridgette came to us after suffering seizures and being dumped at a pound. She is under the care of specialists at Can West Critical Care as well as a local veterinarian. She continues to receive vet care.
Mike came to us after being hit by a car and his front leg had to be amputated.

Muppet came into VADR care requiring surgery for a fractured front leg. An orthopedic surgeon repaired her leg with a plate. She continues to heal and will need further xrays and knee surgery in future.

Shylo arrived limping on 3 legs. After xrays it was determined she'd been suffering with 2 non-recent fractures and her hind leg needed to be amputated.
Halo came to us from a pound on the mainland. She'd been hit by a car and required vet care, xrays and 7 weeks of crate rest.

Please support us by donating so that we may continue to help the ones who need it most.

Bow & Arrow

Bow and Arrow are a pair of beautiful Catahoula Leopard Dogs who need a
stable, loving home. They are athletic, high energy dogs with great
temperament - they're both very friendly dogs. Both Bow and Arrow have had
limited training, but they listen well and are ready to learn.

Arrow is a very gentle, somewhat timid girl who sometimes gets bossed around by her man Bow, who is playful and outgoing. These dogs will need an active home with experienced dog owners who will be able to work on their manners.

They are young dogs, about two years old. Bow weighs 31kg and Arrow weighs
24kg. Before coming to the pound, they had been used for breeding and then
were abandoned.

Luka

Breed: Lab mix
Age: 8 yrs.
Sex: neutered male
Weight: 90 lbs.

luka who is 8, currently lives in a house with three dogs. He is submissive to the other dogs, plays well with the other dogs and is part of the pack. He does have some separation anxiety but if left with another dog he is fine. I would recommend that he goes to a family that presently has another dog but NO cats. He is a very healthy neutered male and accepts new fosters dogs into his environment very quickly.

When there are no distractions. Luka is a dog who is fully engaged with his human, walks without pulling, recalls on command, and is a joy to be around.

When there are distractions, dogs he doesn’t know, prey (rabbits, squirrels,…), Luka becomes overly excited or anxious and while he can be controlled his excitement and energy will raise the level of excitement in all nearby dogs. Luka needs a competent dog handler who can help him stay calm.

He does not get up on furniture, but loves to you to sit with him on the floor for a good cuddle. He can be a big couch (floor) potato but loves to go for long walk, running, or biking. He loves to be around people and if given the opportunity (with a comfy bed) will lie beside you all day. He can be left in the house for 8 hours with his dog buddies with no problems.

He goes to a dog daycare one day a week and loves it. We also use the same business for over nights as it is a kennel free facility. Luka is not crate training as we find there is no need. He love to go for truck rides and will not bark at passersby (dog or human).

Because he is a big dog (90lbs), and gets excited easy he would do be not suited for young kids, (although he loves ALL kids). He would best be suited for children age 10 and older with adult supervision.

He is made to lie down and wait for his command for his meals and has NO food aggressions with people. Loves all vegetables and is very much a lab that would do almost anything for food. He does have sensitivity for wheat and dairy.

Luka has a beautiful personality and tries to communicate with you all the time. It will be very sad to see him goes and will be GREATLY missed.

Commands that he knows:

Here/come
Stay
Down
Down bed
Leave it
Wait
Back up
No noise
Side(when on leash)
Breakfast/Supper
Treat

We're now accepting applications for Luka. Please read the Adoption Info before applying. Contact email below.

Kourtney

Kourtenay is a young female Brittany spaniel/beagle? mix who comes to us from a high kill shelter. She’s still very much a puppy and in need of training. Kourtenay is a beautiful and loving dog, she is sweet and full of beans. She weighs around 18lbs and won’t get an awful lot larger. Kourtenay is not for the faint of heart. She would do well with another energetic playmate or with someone who has acreage and room for her to run. She loves children and is actually quite gentle in nature but might be too busy for very young children.

Kourtenay will require someone home for much of the day in the first few months and a real commitment to exercise and training. She will absolutely blossom in the right environment and will be a wonderful and loyal family pet. Kourtenay is fully vaccinated and spayed.

If you are able to give Kourtenay a loving forever home, please visit the Dog Bless website

Amber Jane (AJ)

Breed: Labrador/golden retriever?
Sex: Spayed female
Age: 3 to 4 years
Weight: 45 lbs.

AJ spent her early years living in a pen outside, escaping occasionally when she was in heat and subsequently having a couple of litters. When her family moved they left her there to fend for herself. When the people went back for mail she'd try to follow the car but they'd speed off and leave her. AJ was on her own for 3 or 4 months. She got pregnant again. It was early December when our rescue partner heard about her, went searching and found her under a dilapidated house with 8 puppies who were about a week old. AJ and puppies went home with her. The puppies were placed quickly once they were weaned but AJ needed expensive treatment for parasites and Mosaic Rescue stepped in to provide that. She is now healthy (and happy) and will receive a thorough vet check and health certificate before travelling to BC to find her forever home.

AJ may have been an outside dog before but she has made up for lost time in the house since going into foster care. She'd be happy spending the day on the couch only going out to potty although once outside she enjoys walks and rides in the car. Her house manners are great and she is an "easy keeper". While AJ is good with other dogs she has been rather fixated on the resident cat so a feline free home would probably be best. Despite being abandoned by previous owners AJ is friendly and trusting of people. We'd like to see her in a loving forever home where she can be with her human family most of the time.

AJ is a Mosaic Rescue dog. For more information about her, Mosaic Rescue and the adoption process see www.mosaicrescue.ca or click on the banner below.

Katie

Breed: Spaniel Mix
Sex: spayed female
Age: 2 years
Weight: 25 lbs

Katie was rescued from a high kill shelter in Arkansas where she was in danger of being put down because she needed medical treatment that Mosaic Rescue provided for her. Her foster mom says she is the best dog she's looked after. She's calm and well behaved inside, completely house trained, good on the leash and in the car. She's affectionate but not not at all pushy and doesn't even get on the furniture without an invitation. She's good with other dogs and while there are no cats in her foster home we think she would be fine with them. She does however like to chase the squirrels in the yard.

We don't know Katie's history and can't imagine how such a lovely girl should have found herself in a shelter with no one coming for her. Katie deserves a loving forever family where she will be cherished. She'll be happiest if she can hang out with her human(s) most of the time and will be a wonderful devoted companion.

Katie is a Mosaic Rescue dog. For more information about her, Mosaic Rescue and the adoption process see www.mosaicrescue.ca or click on the banner below.

Java

BREED: Pomeranian
GENDER: Neutered Male
COLOUR: Black
Age: Approx. 2 years
Bio by Steve Huxter of Transform Animal Behaviour

At my first meeting with Java, shortly after his coming under the care of Victoria Adoptables; I found Java to be curious about my presence, yet cautious and he kept a safe distance from me. By the end of my visit he was coming in closer proximity and on a couple of occasions I was able to handle him briefly.

At the time, Java could act defensively in some instances, such as when being handled and taken out of his kennel when he didn’t want to. He growled and would nip his displeasure at being handled.

After a few months, I recently visited Java to re-assess his behaviour and… wow! I had an entirely different greeting from Java. He was so happy and excited to greet a visitor. I kneeled down on the floor and he jumped onto my lap a wiggling, licking, vibrating little fur ball of joy. An amazing change, which can be attributed to the care and guidance he’s received from his Victoria Adoptables foster caregiver.

Though he has come a long way Java still evolving and is very close to being a fully comfortable and happy dog. He now goes in and out of his kennel when asked. However, there are occasions when Java becomes defensive and may react but those occasions are progressively fewer as time passes and he continues to learn.

Though he is getting progressively better, Java still has his tantrums and it is important that his new family, are confident with dogs and will be able to apply the training techniques with calm confidence. If there are children in the family they should be no younger than 14 years of age. Java needs a consistency of communication that is often difficult for younger folks.

I failed to mention that Java’s adoption is a “package deal”. Along with Java’s adoption comes my support to guide you in the techniques that have been used to achieve the wonderful progress he has made and maintain his learning.

Java is ready for his forever home and I recommend to anyone who considers taking him into their life that you will be enamored by his playful spirit and eager affection.

Padme

spayed female
Mexican mix
4 years old
8 kilos

Padme’s story is unfortunately an all too common one: a car pulls up, someone takes a dog from inside the car and puts it on the street, the car drives away, the dog chases and can’t catch up. So, Padme was left to fend for herself outside of a tire repair shop until a nice dog rescue person noticed her. She is now in good hands in a foster home in Leon, Mexico. She is a quiet small dog, she likes to go for walks, is fine with other dogs, but we are not sure of cats at this point. Padme is coming to Victoria on June 28 and will be read for her forever home. Apply now and check our website for any new information and video of Padme.

Raymundo

neutered male
Mexican Mix

6 kilos

Raymundo is a people dog! He is fine with other dogs but really just wants love and affection from his human.

This little guy is coming to Victoria on June 28th and will be ready for his forever home. Please apply now and check our website for any new information and video of Raymundo.

Abby

Please help find dear sweet Abby her new forever home.....

Meet Abby video

Abby is an estimated 4-5yr female Miniature Pinscher. She is fearful of large dogs & will bark excitedly when she sees them & she does not do well around cats (or any other prey animal) as she will chase, corner & bark aggressively towards them. She is also a fearful barker towards large groups of people, joggers & cyclists, but I am confident that this behaviour can be turned around with proper, frequent socializing. She gets along with small dogs & loves to play with her toys. She is a very affectionate little girl when she is comfortable with you (which fortunately does not take long) & loves to be cuddled & in a warm lap (any known lap will do) she also offers continual free kisses!! However due to her neglectful history of being bred & confined to a small crate & bathtub she has a habit that was learned during this horrible time in her life, she "spins". When a dog repeatedly spins they develop this "coping" behaviour out of complete frustration & stress. I am hopeful that with the right home, love & attention this behaviour will become less frequently. She also has a small bladder so she will need a frequent bathroom schedule to prevent accidents from occurring in the house. I am hoping to find an experienced dog loving home where she will not be left alone for long periods of time nor will she ever be confined to a crate or any other small enclosure ever again. I also believe that she would do best in a calm & quiet home with no young children as Abby's current high anxieties should become reduced if her environment is not busy. If you feel that you are Abby's forever loving home please contact;

Mr. Big

Mr. Big- 2 year old, 8 lb, terrier mix. He is sweet natured but wants to be an alpha and is food possessive which can be dealt with through training. Because of that he would not be a good match for small children. Because he has been recently neutered he is a bit territorial with the other recently neutered male he is being fostered with but he is great with all people and loves to snuggle and be a lap dog. He walks well on leash and seems to be housebroken so long as he is taken out on a regular basis. Cute!! info@howtofindapuppy.com

Guiness

Guinness is a friendly, loveable, energetic 2 year old neutered male. He is medium to large size with a gorgeous coat that looks as if half of him was “dipped in brindle”. The best guess of his mix is hound/lab cross . As with most young dogs Guinness needs daily exercise. This could be a walk, jog or hike, (he is a great running partner) a good romp with other dogs or a few sessions of chasing a ball. He loves to swim and he LOVES to chase balls and sticks. He dissects tennis balls though so the rubber balls might be a better option for him.

Guinness gets along well with other dogs -he has a vocal play style. He “talks” to encourage other dogs to play with him. He seems comfortable with cats and farm animals. Guinness is currently being fostered in a multi- dog home on Galiano and is attending regular training sessions. He has learned: sit, down, “on your rug”, he is learning drop it, and recall. He settles quickly and when in the house tends to be a couch potato. He loves attention and snuggling. His leash walking is great with a halti (size 2 fits him).

Guinness is fully housetrained, healthy and up to date on his shots. We are looking for a family that will include him as a member of their family. As he is young and active and could knock over a young child he will be placed in an adult only or a home with older children. He likes his outdoor play time but his new family must allow him to live with them indoors. Guinness happily sleeps thru the night on his dog bed, does not go on furniture, and does not chew anything but his chew toys. Ideally he should have a fenced yard- he can jump a 4 ft wooden fence though. He is a very easy dog to have around and will make some lucky family a wonderful addition to their home.

If you are interested in welcoming this lovely dog into your life please contact

Ginger

Ginger is a young adult Dachshund who found her way into an Alabama shelter. She was returned to the shelter because she is possessive about food and toys. She gets along fine with other dogs but just not around food and toys so she will need to be an only dog. Ginger is a little nervous, likely because she hasn’t been well treated but she is a dear, sweet little thing. She just needs some confidence building. Ginger would be best placed in an adult home with someone who is around much of the day. An active retiree would be perfect!

Zephyr

7 year old male Formosan Mountain dog x
50 pounds, though should be closer to 40.

Zephyr is a very affectionate, middle-aged man looking for a loyal,
loving, forever family. He has spent most of his life in a shelter in
Taiwan, and is very much enjoying the comforts of Canadian living. Zephyr
does well with other dogs, though doesn't enjoy puppy antics. He ignores
the barn cats, and doesn't seem to notice the chickens. He likes to lie at
your feet and go for walks --don't let his age fool you, he is more than
capable of going for an hour with you!-- But at the same time, he'd also
be happy to curl up and watch TV. Zephyr is housetrained and is
crate-trained for bed-time, although you might find him in there of his
own accord from time to time. Zephyr is an easy-peezy lovely addition to
most any home.

Energy level: Low-Medium
Good with Dogs: Yes
Good with Cats: Yes
Good with Children: Gentle Children. Probably would prefer no toddlers.

Honey

Name: Honey
Breed: Chihuahua X Corgi
Gender: Spayed Female
Age: 2 years

This little girl has TONS of personality and is looking for a home with an active family. She is a happy-go-lucky girl who wants nothing more than to play with her friends. She has a great sense of humor and likes to make you smile. Although Honey is spunky, she settles down well and is a great cuddler when it's time to relax.

Despite this girl's small size, Honey is a ball of energy and is always on the go; she can easily hike for hours. She is a real hunter and she loves to chase snakes, lizards, bugs & birds outside. Honey really enjoys learning and is very food motivated. Honey will be great for a person who is active and enjoys hiking, or who wants to partake in activities like agility competitions. It will be a requirement for whomever adopts her to enroll her in obedience training classes to help her get off on the right foot.

Honey's past is uncertain but she has some emotional scars that give us an idea of how she lived. She is more comfortable around women than men, and she shows some uncertainty around other dogs. She really enjoys the company of dogs that are submissive, low-key, or indifferent to her, but she can be uncomfortable around dogs that are assertive, bouncy, or dominant. Honey needs to go to a home with someone who has experience working with dogs that need to build confidence. Honey forms strong bonds very quickly and gets sad when she's left alone, therefore, she will be happiest with a family where someone is home for most of the day to spend time with her (perhaps someone who has recently retired, or who works from home) or where there is another dog to keep her company. Honey is good around dog-savvy cats (indoors - she will chase them in they're outside) and
she's learning to be around children, although loud, energetic kids scare her.

If you'd like to learn more about Honey, please email us at victoriapets@gmail.com; she is currently in foster care.
